Q: I’m a 30-year-old man in love with a woman whose parents have invited us for a weekend at their home. She claims we’ll be sleeping in separate rooms; I feel that’s antediluvian and ridiculous. We’re not living together,
but we’ve gone out a long time. What do I do? –Frustrated
A: Dear Frustrated,
What you do is sleep in the quarters you’re offered, and be gracious both to your girlfriend and her parents about it. Your hosts are entitled to the set-up that makes them comfortable, and unless they’re clearly on the fence about it and ask how the two of you would prefer your living arrangements while you’re there (in which case you may state your position gently: “We’d love to be together”), I’m afraid you’re out of luck.
